Carers Project
July 27, 2015
At the Workspace Group, we know the importance of people who are caring unpaid for an ill, frail or disabled family member or friend. We want to help to build a Carer friendly community by raising awareness of the carers needs and supporting them as much as we can.
We have been delivering workshops in partnership with O’Kane’s Pharmacy, find more here.
With this programme, the carer is getting a bit of time away from the person they care for and away from the home environment, thus having a bit of ‘me time’.
We set up the Carers Project in 2014, when we realised that there was a lot of support out there for carers, but nothing at a local level. Workspace have one workshop every month teaching relaxation techniques, alternative therapies, horticulture, healthy eating and more. We have tried to use workshops that the carers would enjoy, like laughter yoga.
We also had an away day to Crumlin Road Jail, which went very well.
The carers in the local community area now know that there are other people out there, like them in the same situation, and they are willing to ask O’Kane’s pharmacy for help if needs to be.
We have been awarded funding to hold a second programme and through it, we hope not only to work with the current group of carers that we have, but also to expand it to an additional 10 carers in the local area.
This programme is going to be carer-led, so we will get all the carers together, work out what they want to learn more about and then we will endeavour to put in place in the programme those skills or techniques to help them help themselves.
