Happy Birthday Workspace

The Workspace Group in Draperstown have been celebrating the 25th birthday of the organisation. Set up by the local community with loans provided by 170 local people, the group now employs 115 staff, contributes £1.75m to the local economy through staff salaries, has a turnover of £8M per annum and has offices in Draperstown, Castledawson, Cookstown, Letterkenny Co. Donegal and Wrexham in North Wales.
The group is a social enterprise with its mantra being ‘Passionate about Business, Delivering to our Community’ and runs commercial businesses in home insulation, energy efficient lighting and a recruitment agency alongside community projects such as an After School Club, a Recreation Centre and the Workspace Community Fund. Speaking at the event Cllr Anne Forde the chair of Magherafelt District Council congratulated Workspace on its excellent achievements and commented on how positive an impact the Group has on the Magherafelt district overall.
Dr Michael McAllister the Workspace Chairman paid tribute to the seven original Directors of the company John Donnelly, Brian O’Kane, William Mc Keown, Seamus Kelly, Michael Heron, Des Ward and Patsy Mc Shane who had the vision, enthusiasm and commitment to establish the company more than two decades ago.
Brian Murray, the Workspace Chief Executive outlined the vast range of activities and projects Workspace have delivered over the years including business units, employability programmes, childcare projects, community facilities such as the Back Row Youth Centre, the Rural College as well as initiating other projects which have since grown and expanded. Over the years the Workspace Group have won many awards, have been asked to provide its expertise to countries throughout Europe, as well as Turkey and Egypt, and is now recognised as one of the leading social enterprises in Ireland.
