Workshop for Carers, day 7: Laughter Yoga with Nuala McKeveer
March 31, 2015
Workshop for Carers, day 7.
Laughter Yoga with Nuala McKeveer 1-3 pm, Tuesday 31st March
As part of Workspace’s program to help carers, we are hosting an introduction to Laughter Yoga with Nuala McKeveer. The Laughter Yoga workshop is the latest in a series that we have hosted that aims to help carers. Laughter Yoga is very popular worldwide and there are now some 100,000 Laughter Yoga clubs all over the world.
What is Laughter Yoga?
Laughter Yoga is a practice that involves a person laughing. They simply laugh out loud even if they don’t feel like it, at first. People initially make themselves laugh out loud. This is called ‘voluntary’ laughter. Then after a while people start to laugh for real and soon everyone is having a great time. Laughter Yoga usually takes place within a group and it is basically people having fun together.
Laughter Yoga is more than having a laugh.
As you are laughing, there will also be a series of light exercises. There will be some gentle yoga and other light physical exercises. So as you are laughing you are also getting a workout.
Why should I go?
According to Julie Whitehead a leading practitioner of Laughter Yoga ‘it is a great and fun way to exercise’. Laughing is good for you and it is especially good for carers given the often stressful lives they lead. Among some of the benefits of Laughter Yoga are
- Makes you feel fitter
- Reduces stress levels.
- Reduces your risk of depression and anxiety
- Boosts the immune system
- Lowers your blood pressure.
- Make you feel more energetic.
But most of all it is Fun!
Laughter Yoga is ideal for carers. It is a great way to meet people. Because laughter yoga helps to break down barriers and inhibitions it is a great way to get to know people.
